Genetic structure of an endangered endemic fish (Gobiocypris rarus) in the upper Yangtze River

چکیده
The goal of this study was to examine the genetic diversity and structure of wild populations of rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) in the upper Yangtze River. Individuals from nine locations were sampled and genotyped at eight microsatellite markers. Populations differed from each other on allelic frequency, although there were no significant differences on other genetic diversity indices. Our results further suggested low to moderate levels of population differentiation (FST: 0.0130–0.1537). Specifically, two distinct genetic clusters (C1 and C2) were found, which may be highly correlated with the evolution of water systems. In addition, a weak but significant isolation-by-distance pattern was best explained by riparian distance through man-made channels. It suggested that fish might use man-made channels for gene flow in history, although no significant recent migration event was found. Therefore, this study highlights the need to consider the genetic specificities of G. rarus for sustaining long-term survival of this species. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Morphological variation among wild populations of Chinese rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus): deciphering the role of evolutionary processes.
Gobiocypris rarus Ye et Fu ( 1983 ) is an endemic cyprinid fish in China, and is considered to be an endangered species. From a conservation perspective, its population structure is interesting. In the present study, morphological variation, including morphometric and meristic traits, was assessed among wild samples collected in the upper Yangtze River basin. There were no significant meristic ...
متن کاملSexually dimorphic and ontogenetic expression of dmrt1, cyp19a1a and cyp19a1b in Gobiocypris rarus.
Fish have diverse sex determination and differentiation. DMRT1 and aromatase are conserved in the phyla and play pivotal roles in sex development. Gobiocypris rarus is a small fish used as a model in aquatic toxicology in China and has been used to study the effects of environmental endocrine disruptors on gene expression, but its sexual development remains elusive. Here, we report the full-len...
متن کاملExpression of a novel cytochrome P450 4T gene in rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) following perfluorooctanoic acid exposure.
Cytochrome P450s play an important role in the biotransformation of endogenous substrates and xenobiotics; however, little is known about the function of the CYP4T subfamily in the transformation of environmental pollutants in fish. We isolated a full-length cDNA sequence (designated as CYP4T11) from rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) liver by rapid amplification of cDNA ends. The open reading fra...

THE HUGE THREE-GORGES DAM (TGD) OF THE Yangtze River is going to demonstrate the mighty power of humanity to change and fragment an area of about 58,000 km2 with the formation of a huge reservoir of 1080 km2. It is expected to exert disastrous influences on many terrestrial plants and animals, as discussed by J. Wu et al. in their Policy Forum “Three-Gorges Dam— experiment in habitat fragmentat...
متن کاملMetals in the tissues of two fish species from the rare and endemic fish nature reserve in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, China.
Concentrations of copper, zinc, mercury, and arsenic were measured in the muscle, gill and liver tissues of Coreius heterodon and Pelteobagrus vachelli collected from the rare and endemic fish nature reserve in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The concentrations of copper and zinc in the tissues of these two fish species were higher than those of mercury and arsenic. Highest metal concen...
